ReCREATE Waste Collaborative LLC is based remotely in Long Beach, California and provides municipal clients and waste haulers with professional solid waste and recycling consulting services. The firm’s core specialties include education and outreach, single-use plastics technical assistance, edible food recovery site visits, residential route reviews, and waste characterizations. Our approximately 20-person team consists of part- and full-time staff that help communities across the country improve their waste diversion programs, educate businesses and residents, and gather important data on contamination for informing policies and achieving compliance with state and local mandates. Job Overview
ReCREATE is hiring up to four part-time (15-20 hours per week), temporary (July 2025 through January 2026) Recycling Specialist I’s to help amplify the firm’s solid waste and recycling education and outreach efforts for residents and commercial businesses in San Diego’s communities of concern. We are seeking individuals who are eager to learn about California solid waste, recycling, and organics recycling laws (specifically Senate Bill 1383: Short-Lived Climate Pollutants) and help community members understand how to participate effectively in local waste programs.
Responsibilities
● Proactively schedule and organize phone calls to business managers, owners, and property managers to establish initial and follow-up site visits
● Conduct in-person visits to businesses and residents without supervision following adequate training
● Engage with and educate residents on compliance details associated with deliverables
● Track and record the details and compliance results of business site visits for necessary reporting; keep site visit details organized
● Provide written follow-up to businesses and building managers to offer resources and tools that support compliance with solid waste and recycling policies
● Use software programs for managing data and use online tools to track site visit progress, communicate with businesses, and support program initiatives
● Perform commercial waste audits/assessments to identify contamination and recommend service level changes and training for waste and recycling
● Maintain a high level of professionalism when interacting with the community, the team and the client
Qualifications
● Ability to work both independently and with a team
● Strong time management and ability to meet deadlines
● Excellent written, public speaking, and overall communication skills
● Ability to interface professionally with community members
● Service oriented; actively looks for ways to help people
● Knowledge of California solid waste and recycling regulations
● Knowledge of zero waste principles and practices
● Must have reliable transportation
● Must have a reliable, working smart phone for use when visiting businesses and apartment complexes
Preferred Qualifications
● Preference for individual fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese or Tagalog
● Preference for individual with experience in community engagement
Physical Requirements
● Willingness to work outside in varying weather conditions
● Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time
● Ability to lift over 20 lbs.
● Ability to walk up and down stairs while carrying supplies
